There was alot to learn by observing nature, the mangrove plants and animals that lived in that community. Two interesting facts that I learnt when I went to Pasir Ris Mangrove was how a Mudskipper breathes and why a Mud Lobster builds its home near the Mangrove trees.

Pulling the weeds was the best part not for only this trip but even for the trip to the MacRitchie Reservoir's Central Catchment. We went to the rainforest
and the mangrove as a whole class. We , especially me , learned a lot of
things including how animals behave and react. Thw instructor also caught a
person bringing plastic bags full of bread. As I asked her why she took his
picture , she said that he was going to feed the monkeys and it is forbidden
in the place. We saw a lot of animals such as moniter lizards.
Along the way we had to pull out weeds to help the normal trees to grow
again. However it suits the event a lot. On second thought, no. So why is it interrelated? I fear the presence of snakes and other deadly threats. No, I am not timid - just a bit cautious. The two trips were interesting, adventurous, bond-fostering and eye-opening or they put it, educational, extending potential, sparking creativity and worthwhile. For the pessimists, the description would be wasteful both monetary and time wise, hot and sickly.

For me it was a very refreshing, interesting experience and it brought a very nationalistic feel. Who would have believed that a small red dot in the world map has one of the best nature reserves? That is impressive, is not it? It was a very memorable event for me, my body and soul. It has been positively cemented to my very being. No will could ever rob me of the lingering memories, even if death tore apart my soul from this outer envelope of the body. My outer being might perish in death, be engulfed in impure flames of hatred but that moment lives on. Not even time shall part us. It just meant it was a very good trip and I shall remember it, when God decides that my time is up.

The trip would, of course, have not be as successful as it was without the selfless flow of guidance, filled with knowledge and wisdom, from the guides. I do not know about the rest of the guides; mine brought joy to the very depths of my heart. The mangrove was very interesting so was the forest. Brimming with life which we hardly take any notice of in modern-day, fast-paced <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Singapore.

It was the first time I went to a mangrove. The stubborn weeds held fast to their positions, refusing our tugs to draw them out. The fire ants seemed to be on the ugly greens' side as they bit us with all their bodily might. Perspiration flowed down our sun-beaten foreheads, as we continued the battle with the cussed enemies of nature. In the end Man emerged victorious, and we were satisfied with having saved the other plants. Our ears could almost hear the thankful cries of the mangrove and the forest for our sheer bravery and strength. We entered the mangrove as a reward in exchange for the weed pulling battle. The ground was cotton soft. I got my long pants attached to mud thanks the people behind me, names not mentioned so as to not reveal the identity of the underaged delinquents. I felt that the 'apek' who was fishing there was, is, and would always be blind. Could he not see the warning boards all over the jetty, titanical, billboard ones, with neon lights flashing, all of which forbade fishing of any form there? The highlight of it all was when the guide- Mrs. Grace pointed to us the mud lobsters, their home and the rescue, were just flames of miracle.

The forest trial went well with another guide, Mrs. Ooi. Through the thick forest showing animal of all sorts, we traveled till dawn arrived. Well, almost. It was rather late when I got home. I missed my Korean show, 'Save the last dance for me', and that had no recovery, even the trip. I took back my words- that nothing would make me hate the trip, save for God and family. Korean shows should be added to the list too. While the others were busy observing two birds, I saw a Colungo about 45 degrees behind the birds. It was flat on the bark of the tree. I was about to open my mouth to tell the others when it swiftly went behind the tree it was lying belly-flat on.

The only thing I was curious about was why we had to pay to for it. We were the ones who worked hard on the weeds, with no inkling if we were to see home again or otherwise. What was the $25 for? The guides? They did nothing fruitful! The bus? We could not even eat onboard it! Not even think about food or salivate. The guides were volunteers. For the nature reserve? Plants use money now? So, except for that, it was flawless to me and the best trip in my secondary school life. Ha!!!

Real people. Our instructor,
Grace, was very fun and humourous. She teaches us the things in the
worksheet very detail. and in the end, we have a clear mind of the
Creatures. I have also learnt
their natural habitat. I have also learnt that some plants are poisonous.
I have learnt how to pluck out the weeds and to identify which is the weeds.
It is really tough plucking out the weeds because the roots are stuck in the
soil. If we are not careful, we may get a cut when we pluck out the weeds,
especially when the weeds are long. I have learnt the different types of
ants, example fire ant. I have also learnt that some rare types of squirrels
are going extinct. Scientists are trying to help and to avoid the extinction
of the animals. The time should be longer as i think that the time is not
enough. It was my first time going to the mangrove swamp. i enjoy it very
much because i can experience, see, discover and learn the different types of
plants and animals. I hope to learn more and hope to have more ecology
programs. Some of the plants and animals there are rare and cannot be found
easily. still find the trip exciting as i seldom see all this
insects in my neighboorhood.i also like the instructor teaching us as they
are thoughtful and resourceful as she have told us lots of information we do
not know.they are also quite patience as some of us was quite noisy during
the trip. during the trip i also saw animals which is not common in the
neighboorhood or not found in the neighboorhood like a snake as it is too
dangerous to be left in the neighboorhood.I find the trip exciting and i
hope to go again and the next time i go i would not want to leave as it
gives us a very enjoyable and fun experience.
_________________________________________________________________
Get cheap It was
fun and interesting as I discovered and learnt about new species of plants,
trees, fungus, fruits, insects and birds. It was also enjoying as I got to
spend the day with my classmates. The instructors were very friendly and
nice. They were also bubbly and cheerful with us. However, they are strict
about what is and what is not to be done for our safety. The activities ,
such as plucking out weeds at the mangroove swamp and measuring the distance
between weeds at the rainforest, were not very tough either. For example , i can now identify insects and plants which i
have never heard of before! I think studies about nature is very interesting
and i'm sure it would help me in the future. We also did very fun stuff like
pulling out the harmful weeds hence helping to protect the trees and ensure
a healthy growth. At the end of each lesson , we did an evaluation on what
were the insects and plants we saw during the trip.
The best thing was , we got to touch the plants first-hand. And the teachers
also provided us with many interesting explanations from the instructors! We
also received a blue or orange wristband from the instructors at the end of
both trips. I really enjoyed the trip and i hope there will be more trips
organized like this one!

Regards ,
Zhi Qing
_________________________________________________________________
Get MSN Hotmail alerts on your mobile.
http://mobile.msn.com/ac.aspx?cid=uuhp_hotmail

Toh Jing Sheng

During the ecology programme i have learnt a lot of things -
i learnt how to see the differences between a weed and a plant. I also learnt that how human activities are affecting the life of the
animals at the reserve that forced them to extincition.
At the last day of the programme we were given a wrist band as to remember
them
_________________________________________________________________
Get cheap fares online with MSN Travel http://www.msn.com.sg/travel/

samuel joel ng rui ming

The CIP was quite interesting. On the first day, the instructors
briefed us on going to the mangrove swamp. Then for fun, they played a song
about the mangrove and we had to sing along with it. Later, they told us
that we were suppose to do a project about the cip which was making a
poster. Afterwards, they told us that we would have to pull out weeds in the
manngrove and learn how to take care of the forests in Singapore.
After the briefing, we went to the school garden to practice to
measure weeds and to see what was the tempreture of the sunlight on the
garden after that, we went to the school grounds to make drawings and
observations of some trees. It was fun. Next, the instructor showed us some
weeds that we would have to pull out in the mangrove. An example was Smilax
which was a hairy weed. After we did all this, we ate a quick lunch and got
on the buses to go to the mangrove.
When we got to the mangrove, our instructor told us the tempreture of
the mangrove as we had to compare the tempreture of the mangrove to the
school garden. After this we went inside the mangrove. The joureny inside the
mangrove and the activitie we carried out there were very fun and
intresting. We saw lots of animals which some of them i have never seen
before. We saw animals such as crabs, mud lobsters, mudskippers and many
more plants and animals. We even saw the Red lobster! We also had to pull
out weeds in the mangrove. It was very fun. After we pulled out some of the
weeds, we had to go home.
A week later, we had to go to the forest to do more CIP. This time i
was quite excited as the first CIP was intresting. We had a quick lunch and
off we went to the forest. The trip to the forest proved to be very fun and
intresting. We saw lots of animals and plants such as a sun skink,
teripians, rubber trees, plams and even monkeys! We even got a picture of
one! In the forest, we measured the weeds postions. after we did that, we
pulled them out. We pulled weeds until we had to go home. Overall, i think
the CIP was fun and intresting. I even learnt how forests were were very
important to Singapore and what we should do to consurve them.
_________________________________________________________________
Get an advanced look at the new version of MSN Messenger.
http://messenger.msn.com.sg/Beta/Default.aspx

Neo Su Min

I like more going to the mangrove swamp than rainforest .There are more
things for me to learn at mangrove . The most interesting part of that trip
to mangrove is that i am able to see mud crab , they only appears at night ,
not in the day .
The rainforest is more of a tiring trip as we have to pull those weeds out
, those weeds are strong .
We even got a picture of
one! In the forest, we measured their postions. after we did that, we pulled
them out. We pulled weeds until we had to go home. Overall, i think the CIP
was fun and intresting. I even learnt how forests were were very important
to Singapore and what we should do to consurve them.
_________________________________________________________________
Get MSN Hotmail alerts on your mobile.
http://mobile.msn.com/ac.aspx?cid=uuhp_hotmail

jolyn

the trip to the mangroove swamp and the rain forest was very fun...
the mangroove swamp was much more tiring and very scary as the fire ants
were all around... biting me all over my body... its so scary...
the trip to the rainforest was much more fun... pulling the smilex was so
fun for me... so shiok...
i feel that the trip should be longer as its so damn fun lor... hope theres
more activities like this kind...
outdoor learning is much more fun than i expected...
end here...
_________________________________________________________________
Find love on MSN Personals http://personals.msn.com.sg/

Michelle Neo

Going to a mangrove swamp and a rainforest certainly was a fun and enjoyable
educational experience for me. We had fun pulling out weeds and trying to
spot various animals that were rare and hard to find.
I've never really known that mangroves are useful when it comes to high
tide, I didn't know that the tree could actually block out the water. I've
seen some creatures that I've never seen with my own eyes before, only in a
textbook. A mudskipper, a snake in a tree, mud crabs to name a few.
It was a pleasant learning experience I gained knowledge about, it makes me
much more interested in the environment that I have never really got to
learn about, being stuck indoors studying and all. Overall, the weed-pulling
was the funniest activity I faced during the two visits to the mangrove and
the rainforest.
It was fun to see my classmates calling for more people to help them pull
out the stubborns weeds, we were all united in some way, playing "Tug-O-War"
with the weeds. Mostly we won, other times we had to find the root of the
weed and snip it loose. There was a drawback, unfortunately, there were
moquitos buzzing around, trying to bite us. I wish they wouldn't exist
though.
Fun, tiring, to me this CIP activity was way worth the time away from
textbooks and studying. I hope that maybe next year we could go weed-pulling
and journeying through our natural habitats again, I'm looking forward to
it.
Michelle Neo, 14
1A3
10/9/2006
_________________________________________________________________
Download MSN Messenger emoticons and display pictures.
http://ilovemessenger.msn.com/?mkt=en-sg

samuel joel ng rui ming

The CIP was quite interesting. I had the
dishevelled experience of a disgruntled gardener for a few minutes. We amused
ourselves with pulling out weeds and flinging them to the boardwalk, but
after a few moments, we were beginning to get bored. We had no choice -
pulling weeds was a must...
We had a hillarious experience with the monkeys at MacRitchie
Reservoir. One of my classmates even took pictures of them.We even saw a
monkey peeing! Later, we laughed ourselves sick at the sight of silly
monkeys doing stupid stuff.
A extremely fun time was spent at both venues of the field trip.I felt
that I have grown a step closer to nature. I hope that the school would
conduct more of such trips - [WITHOUT worksheets and at a more appealing
venue, for example, Sentosa.]I mean, the students would sure be more
enthusiastic about going to Sentosa, you know...
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Tan Li Lin
_________________________________________________________________
Find just what you are after with the more precise, more powerful new MSN
Search. http://search.msn.com.sg/ Try it now.

Questions To Think About

Before Activity:

Who are the people you are serving?

Why the need for your service?

What do you do to prepare for the service?

What and where do you go to gather information on the organisation/institution you are

assisiting?

How can you gain from this service? How can the service rendered be more meaningful and

purposeful?
